Delicious Sourdough Herb and Cheese Rolls Recipe
These homemade sourdough rolls are filled with a cheesy, herby goodness that will melt in your mouth. Perfect for any meal, these rolls are soft, flavorful, and easy to make.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • ½ cup (120g) sourdough starter (discard or active)
  • ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk
  • 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or parmesan)
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Topping (Optional):

  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
  • Extra shredded cheese and herbs for garnish

Instructions:

1. Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warm milk, melted butter, sugar, salt, and optional garlic powder. Gradually mix in the flour and knead for about 8 minutes until a soft, elastic dough forms. Cover the dough and let it rest for 4-6 hours (or overnight in the fridge for a more intense sourdough flavor).

2. Prepare the Filling:
In a small bowl, mix the shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or parmesan), softened butter, oregano, basil, and black pepper. Set aside.

3. Shape the Rolls:
Roll the dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick. Evenly spread the cheesy herb mixture over the surface. Roll the dough tightly like a cinnamon roll and slice it into 10-12 rolls.

4. Final Rise:
Place the rolls in a greased baking dish. Cover and let them rise for 1-2 hours until they become puffy and doubled in size.

5. Bake:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the rolls with an egg wash made from the egg yolk and water, then sprinkle with extra cheese and herbs. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

6. Cool & Serve:
Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with butter for the perfect indulgent treat!
