A decadent twist on the beloved South African classic, this Chocolate Malva Pudding is rich, gooey, and drenched in a luscious dark chocolate sauce. Perfect for cozy nights or impressing guests with a warm, indulgent dessert.

Ingredients

For the Pudding:

  • 1 cup (200g) brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp apricot jam
  • 1¼ cups (310ml) cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • ½ cup (125ml) milk

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup (250ml) cream
  • ½ cup (125ml) milk
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 100g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a medium baking dish.
  2. Make the Batter: Beat the brown sugar and eggs until pale and fluffy. Mix in cocoa powder and apricot jam.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to the egg mixture.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in melted butter, vinegar, and milk until smooth and fully combined.
  5. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared dish and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean.
  6. Prepare the Sauce: While the pudding bakes, heat cream, milk, and sugar in a saucepan. Add chopped chocolate and butter, stirring until smooth and melted.
  7. Soak the Pudding: As soon as the pudding comes out of the oven, pour the warm chocolate sauce over the top to soak in.

Serve: Best enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of custard.
